Their Story

Wensleydale creamery is steeped in heritage and provenance. They are custodians of an 875-year history of cheesemaking in the Dale which began in 1150 when French monks first settled in Wensleydale, bringing with them their cheese-making recipe.

1897 saw the first creamery built in Hawes, when Edward Chapman, a local corn and provisions merchant, began to purchase milk to make Wensleydale cheese on a larger scale.

Today, Wensleydale is an award-winning recipe, and home to the iconic creamy, crumbly classic Yorkshire Wensleydale
a cheese that’s as timeless, traditional and universally loved as the beautiful Dale from which it comes.
The Creamery is an interactive visitors centre as well as cafe and shop which gives visitors the chance to view the process and creation of this vintage classic.
